Chemical Peels: What Are They and Are They Right For You?

To Peel or Not to Peel, That is the Question

Chemical peels. What are they and are they right for you? They can be extremely beneficial for your skin and require consistency and patience. A series of peels may be required to help us achieve desired results. There are 3 types of skin conditions that can benefit from a peel. Let's determine if a peel is right for you. Check out the details below and come in to see us if you'd like to chat!

1. Aging skin

In the case of aging skin, peels remove surface protein build up and stimulate fibroblast activity.  Why do we want this?  Increased fibroblast activity enhances collagen and elastin production.  In addition, peels accelerate cell turnover and the result is more youthful looking skin with less fine lines and wrinkles.  Who doesn’t want that!

2. Pigmentation issues

Pigmentation issues are a major concern for all age groups. In the case of dark spots or hyperpigmentation, chemical peels remove surface proteins that house melanin. Chemical peels are ultra effective in removing surface hyperpigmentation and producing a more even skin tone.

3. Acne

Acneic skin can be helped by a chemical peel. Those with overall oily, congested skin and blackheads are ideal candidates for peels.

For acne, the most beneficial acid to use is Salicylic Acid as this acid focuses on sebum in the follicle, it actually exfoliates the follicle.  How cool is that!

However, there is one limitation to applying a peel to acneic skin.

Acne cannot be of a grade 4 or above.  Grade 4 acne presents as inflamed cysts and nodules on the skin.  The acne may be a deep red or purple color and often leaves scars.

In our practice, we would treat this condition with an Oxygen RX Cocoa (Chocolate & Champagne) treatment instead.  We would address the inflamed acne first and once we calm that down, we would consider using peels to continue to address the issue.

Another alternative to a peel for acneic skin over a grade 4 is to use enzymes which also remove surface proteins from the skin but will not further aggravate it.
